As a personal injury attorney, I've heard all the jokes and personal attacks. I've been called an ambulance chaser at parties despite most of my clients being referred to me by friends, other lawyers, and former clients. It's okay. I've got thick skin. I get asked all the time when my face will be on a billboard or TV commercial. I think lawyer advertising while it can be silly is necessary because most people don't already have an established relationship with a lawyer let alone a personal injury attorney and need to find our services somehow.

While I'm comfortable with the general bias against personal injury attorneys, some injured people are uncomfortable with hiring a personal injury attorney and may delay or forgo getting important legal assistance to protect their rights out of fear they will be negatively perceived by others and even the insurance company. Here's why fear of being judged should not delay or stop you from hiring a personal injury attorney to help you if you've been injured and believe you are entitled to compensation.

Here are 3 reasons why worrying how you will be perceived shouldn't stop you from hiring a personal injury attorney.

    1. Insurance companies have lots of attorneys to protect their rights. Lawyers for the insurance companies get paid lots of money to do their jobs well and that's designed to minimize the value of your claim so the insurance company can keep more of its money. Don't let the insurance company off the hook by delaying or not contacting an attorney to learn how to protect your rights.
    2. Insurance companies employ a team of claims adjusters, claims supervisors, medical staff, private investigators, and others who are highly trained at minimizing the value of your claim so the insurance company can keep more of its money. Don't be fooled into thinking you can match their expertise and manpower on your own. Unlike the insurance company, as the injured party, its your job to prove your case and there are numerous ways you can unknowingly hurt your chances. Don't forget that everything else in your life like family and work obligations don't stop simply because you are injured, and as an injured person you now have another full-time job on your already full plate. Going to the doctor for treatment. You don't have time to deal with an insurance claim on your own. Get the help you deserve. Contact a lawyer immediately to learn how to protect your rights.
    3. The stakes are too high to not protect your legal rights. Too often I speak with people who waited to talk with a lawyer and in doing so, steps to protect their claim were missed. There are many reasons other than the fear of feeling judged that people delay talking to a personal injury lawyer. Those range from "I thought I'd get better," "I thought it wasn't a big enough case," or "I thought the insurance company would do the right thing and take responsibility but they didn't." There are too many reasons to list here. The bottom line is that waiting only helps the insurance company because the longer you wait the chances increase that important steps to protect your rights are missed. Consulting a personal injury attorney should cost you nothing other than your time. Most lawyer consultations are free and if it isn't, there are plenty of attorneys who do not charge for initial consultations including at Bike Brain Law.
